If you’re like most people, you’re commuting, working 9+ hours, taking care of your home and children, running errands, and trying to live a social and exciting life. It’s exhausting.
And when you think about your daily schedule that way, it’s pretty easy to say you don’t have time for things like exercise, meditation, reading, money management, or meal planning.
There’s another way to think that can change how you live your day-to-day life for the better.
Instead of trying to build your healthy habits into your life, you may want to build your life around your healthy habits. Then, you can find places for all of the other stuff.
Our first line of thinking might go like this:
“Today, I need to be up by 7 to drive and get to work by 9. I have to work 9 hours, drive home, make dinner, and prep for the next day. I guess I could force the gym into there on Tuesdays and Thursdays… Maybe I can read on the weekends, and I’ll set up a money app to check in with each month.”
At least we’re trying, right? Well, let’s try approaching it from our other line of thinking:
“Every morning, I stretch, read something positive, and eat a healthy breakfast. Mid-morning I learn a new skill, and during lunch I read and meditate to reset my stress.
In the afternoons, I hit the gym. When I get home, I log my food for the day, work on the hobby I love, and stretch before bed. Each Friday, I have an hour booked to go through all of my finances and make sure I’m on track. Sunday afternoon is all the chores I need to do in order to have another great week.
So, I need to fit my life around those healthy habits. An extra half hour in the AM should work. I can learn a skill through podcasts on my drive to work. I’ll take a full lunch and find a quiet place I can go every day. I need to leave by 6 to do that workout I enjoy. Then, home chores and quality time with the family. A half-hour in the evening just before bed is plenty of time for the closing-down habits.”
How does that feel? Work, errands, and juggling your schedule isn’t what life is all about. Those are just the supplemental activities you must do in order to live a true, fulfilling, life: a life filled with physical and mental growth, stacking wealth, finding places to give back, and enjoying the world around you.
Take some time today to build a healthy-habit list and schedule, then fit the rest of your life into it. It’s just a mindset shift, but not one many people make. I promise that if you stick to it, you’ll finally be able to make all of those healthy habits stick.
